Infertility has no gender bias. It affects both men and women. This could be due to various reasons, both known and unknown. Some of the known factors that cause infertility in women are endometriosis, poor ovarian reserve, ovulation disorders and low progesterone levels. In men, these are low sperm count and motility, STD, chronic diseases, injury blocking sperm discharge and aging.

Most infertility disorders can be treated by medical help except aging. These treatments can be expensive and have adverse side effects which would need separate medical treatment. IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) are among the better methods for treating infertility. In IVF, a hormonally controlled ovulation procedure, the egg cells are fertilized externally, in a fluid medium and then transferred to the womb. In ICSI, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg. These treatments are recommended when all other methods have failed. This process is different from the biological process of conception, in that the eggs are removed by an embryologist from the woman's ovary, fertilizing them in a lab and then transferring it to the uterus. In the natural, biological process, the stronger sperm penetrates the egg. The healthier sperm and egg get selected naturally. In the artificial process the danger is that the embryologist may fail to select stronger and healthier sperm and egg and this may lead to genetic disorders in the child, even at a later stage.

Auricular, or simply known as ear acupuncture, is found to be very effective in treating cases of infertility in women due to ovarian malfunction. In this acupuncture method, the brain is found to transfer the hormonal signal more effectively to the ovary. This is borne out by women who have received this treatment for about 30 times in a 3-month period as against those women who underwent conventional hormonal therapy. The former had no side effects unlike the latter.

The alternative treatment emphasizes a lot on diet and lifestyle changes and hence proscribes products that contain caffeine. Coffee, cocoa, chocolate and green teas (with caffeine content) are not favored. Likewise, black tea and colored soft drinks that impair conception are off the list. It is said that one and a half cup of coffee can delay conception in a woman. Coffee is the bad boy for pregnancy.

Fish that's contaminated with PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) is also reported to inhibit pregnancy. One study on women subjects, who had more than one meal that had PCB contaminated fish from Lake Ontario, found their ability to procreate had diminished in just a month.

Chinese medicines, acupuncture and the holistic approach are reportedly the best for the treatment of infertility. The holistic approach investigates the very basis of the problem before prescribing the treatment that covers physical, spiritual and emotional aspects. The conventional treatment investigates only the physical (human organs) and fails to identify and eliminate the cause. It also gives rise to side effects. The holistic method, on the other hand, prescribes a natural remedy and advises a lifestyle that offers a solution to the problem once the cause is found.
